Scratch Camp is a free 3 week opportunity for kids to familiarize themselves with Scratch (a coding software). It usually starts around August 1st and hopes to support summer learning, offer coding challenges, and facilitate creative expression.
This year's theme is “Wonders of Nature.” Campers get to create their own and remix existing nature-themed projects. Projects are then submitted online to the Main Camp Scratch Studio. The Camp studio is also a place to interact with other Scratchers and Camp Counselors, get ideas, gain inspiration, and ask questions. According to Scratch Wiki, Scratch camp started in 2011 and is hosted every summer on the platform.
If you've never heard of Scratch and want a sneak peak of what it can do, the following video shows how to code a character designer.
Below are Scratch Camp themes from previous years.
Year | Theme |
2023 | Space, Stars, & Beyond: Scratchers were encouraged to create space-themed projects. For example, an interactive telescope, an animation explaining the life cycle of a star, or designing a logo for a space travel agency. |
2022 | Fantastical Fantasies: Scratchers were encouraged to create people, places, and creatures with magical powers. For example a unicorn dancing on a rainbow, a superhero that kept forgetting their cape, or an underwater city. |
2017 | Down Deep: Scratchers were encouraged to create stories, animations, games or whatever they chose that featured a creature (real or imagined) from the ocean. |
Scratch on!
